Local Anæsthesia
نویسنده
چکیده
on the cadaver and practical demonstrations. The first two chapters deal with the local anaesthetic drugs used, the types of local anaesthesia, the advantages and disadvantages of local anaesthesia, the preparation of the patient, instruments, and of the solution. Separate chapters describe the various methods in the head, neck, thorax, abdomen, subperitoneal organs, upper extremities and lower extremities. Only those methods which are free. from risk are advocated by the author, and one notices that he does not recommend the paravertebral route for this reason. After describing each method, he presents the percentage of success and failure attending it and gives his advice as to its adoption or not. He recommends the ordinary Record syringe with needles ranging from 3 cm. to 12 to 15 cm. in length, and states that 250 c.c. of a i%, 100 c.c. of a 1%, and 40 c.c. of a 2% solution of novocain should not be exceeded. He advises the use of adrenalin mixed with the novocain solution in dosage which varies in different fields, because its use decreases the toxicity of novocain by producing more gradual absorption. There is undoubtedly great scope for this type of anaesthesia particularly as an auxiliary to general anaesthesia. In Calcutta we have had excellent results, in upper abdominal work with "abdominal field block" combined with " anterior splanchnic anaesthesia" and a minimum of open ether. The book is well printed and illustrated with a good index, and we cordially recommend it.

Stochastic Dynamics of Anæsthesia
Recent developments in the analysis of synchronization and directionality of couplings for noisy nonlinear oscillators are being applied to study the complex interactions between cardiac and respiratory oscillations, and brain waves (especially delta and gamma), during anæsthesia. It is found that marked changes occur in the inter-oscillator interactions during anæsthesia in both rats and human...

We hypothesised that, associated with the state of anæsthesia, there exist characteristic changes in both cardio-respiratory and cerebral oscillator parameters and couplings, perhaps varying with depth of anaesthesia. Electrocardiograms (ECGs), respiration and electroencephalograms (EEGs) were recorded from two groups of 10 rats during the entire course of anæsthesia following the administratio...

is central and not peripheral. After an account of the instruments and solutions used, the general technique of conduction anaesthesia, of the anaesthetisation of skin areas, tumour bases and deep lying operative fields is described and illustrated by clear diagrams. The author then takes up the application of his methods to the various regions of the body. In each case there is a brief but ade...
